What is Luteolin?

Luteolin is a flavonoid, and more precisely one of the citrus bioflavonoids. Just like most flavonoids, it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. It is found in high amounts in parsley, thyme, peppermint, basil herb, celery and artichoke.

Luteolin exerts a variety of pharmacological activities and anti-oxidant properties associated with its capacity to scavenge oxygen and nitrogen species. It also shows potent anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) signaling in immune cells. www.ebiochem.com

Luteolin displays strong antinociceptive (against pain originating from peripheral nerves) action in mice .(85) This is in accordance with the fact that Luteolin is an active principle of Brazilian plant Wedelia paludosa, traditionally used against the variety of disorders, including painful conditions. www.ebiochem.com

Luteolin is a naturally occurring nutrient known as a bioflavanoid and plays an important role in good health. It is found in high amounts in many plants, including carrots, capsicum, celery, artichoke, lemon, olive oil, peppermint, rosemary, thyme, parsley, basil and chamomile. This super nutrient acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting the body from free-radical damage and helping to slow down the ageing process. Luteolin also possesses impressive anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immune-modulating properties. Luteolin is also useful for treating people with inflammatory conditions of the respiratory, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal systems, as well helping prevent inflammatory responses in people with allergies. By including luteolin-rich foods in your diet you can help promote healthy blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, both important for prevention of type 2 diabetes. www.ebiochem.com

How can I Increase Fiber into my Diet?

There are many reasons to increase fiber in your diet. Eating food with a high fiber content can have many benefits to your general health and well being. Maintaining a diet high in fiber can lower cholesterol, help eliminate heart disease and even lower the risk of cancer. The foods that you eat regularly may already be high in fiber, but there are still ways to help increase fiber intake.http://www.ebiochem.com/

Including more raw fruit and vegetables in your diet will increase fiber. Dietary fiber can only be found in food made from plants, so increasing your intake of raw fruit, especially the raw fruit peel, will help. For the best results, eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Fruits that are excellent sources of fiber include berries, pears, apples and prunes. If you want to increase fiber by eating more vegetables, stick to Brussells sprouts, carrots, potatoes and lettuce.http://www.ebiochem.com/

Many digestive complaints, including constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis, can be reduced by adding fiber to the diet. Adding bran and whole-grain products to your shopping list will boost your fiber intake. One of the most popular breakfast cereals to increase fiber is bran flakes. There are also many other cereals that have bran added. Buy some wheat bran from health food stores and add it to your favorite cereal. You can also try bran muffins to increase fiber.

Instead of eating white bread, try whole wheat bread. If you eat a lot of rice with your meals, swap to brown rice instead of white. Beans are an excellent source of fiber, and eating cooked beans once or twice a week will increase fiber intake. http://www.ebiochem.com/

For some people, there are a few side effects from a sharp increase of fiber in the diet. Many people suffer from bloating, stomach cramps or gas when they increase fiber. By starting with small changes and increasing foods that are high in fiber over a period of weeks, these effects can be prevented. http://www.ebiochem.com/

Also remember to increase your fluid intake when you increase fiber. If you are not already drinking at least six to eight glasses of water per day, then you should consider doing so. When you begin to increase fiber, you should raise your water intake by at least two glasses. This will not only aid digestion, but has also been proven to help contribute to weight loss.

How Do I Choose the Best Pickling Vinegar?

Pickling, also referred to as brining or corning, is a common method of preserving vegetables and some other foods, such as eggs or sausage. Peppers, pickles, and other vegetables and foods are often canned in a brine of vinegar and spices for safe food storage. Any type of vinegar can be used as pickling vinegar. The type of vinegar you use primarily depends on the flavor you want the pickled product to have. Common white vinegar and apple cider vinegar are the most popularly used types of pickling vinegar, though other types can also be used.  http://www.ebiochem.com/

Vinegar is generally available with a four or five percent acidity level. Some types of pickling vinegar may have an even higher acidic content. Most pickling is done in a hot water bath canner, though a pressure canner can also be used. If you are using the hot water bath canning method, it is important that you use only vinegar that contains at least five percent acidity, as the acidity level guards against harmful bacteria. Distilled vinegars with less than five percent acidity do not have high enough acid levels for safe pickling and canning.  http://www.ebiochem.com/

White vinegar is the most popular type of pickling vinegar. It allows the foods to maintain their color and adds a tartness to the pickled product. Many people feel that white vinegar brings out the flavor of the food and spices used in pickling better than other types of vinegar. Some types of pickling vinegar will discolor the vegetables or other food and add a distinct flavor that may or may not be desired.  http://www.ebiochem.com/

If you want your pickles, peppers or other preserved food to have somewhat of a sweet flavor, apple cider vinegar can be a good choice. This type of pickling vinegar is often used for canning sweet pickles and peppers. Apple cider vinegar has a slightly fruity flavor that adds sweetness to the pickled product. You will likely still need to add sugar for sweetness, but not as much as you would need to if you used white vinegar. Some people prefer not to use apple cider vinegar because the it darkens the food product.  http://www.ebiochem.com/

Other types of vinegar include balsamic, wine, and fruit. Flavored vinegars are also popular, and they include such flavors as raspberry, fig, and blueberry. More exotic fruit flavors include blood orange or pear. Herbs commonly used to flavor vinegar include tarragon, thyme and oregano. These types of vinegar should only be used as pickling vinegar if you are sure of their acidic content.

What is Pink Insulation?

Fiberglass insulation is used in homes and other buildings to block sound and heat transfer. It is almost always pink in color. This insulation is colored artificially to make it recognizable to consumers. The pink coloring dates back to the invention of modern fiberglass insulation by an employee of the Owens-Corning company in 1938. Owens-Corning colored its insulation in a distinctive way for marketing purposes at first, and pink insulation became so well-known that most fiberglass insulation is now made to be pink.http://www.ebiochem.com/

Pink insulation serves as a very cost-effective and energy-saving product for consumers. It also performs very well in comparison with other forms of insulation, such as cellulose. While pink insulation settles very slightly or not at all, depending on the type, it never loses its insulating power. Cellulose, on the other hand, settles to a much higher degree, sometimes up to 25%. This causes it to lose a large amount of its ability to insulate. http://www.ebiochem.com/

Fire safety is another parameter in which pink insulation defeats the competition. Since it is made of small fibers of glass, it does not combust. Cellulose insulation is often made up of newspaper which has been ground up or shredded. To guard against the obvious fire hazard, this material is treated with fire retardant to make it safer. http://www.ebiochem.com/

While pink insulation is very effective, there are certain precautions which must be taken when installing or otherwise coming into contact with it. The fibers are very small, meaning that particles of imsulation can easily become airborne, causing irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Some people are more sensitive than others to these effects, but they do not constitute an allergic reaction. For some time it was thought that exposure to these fibers could be carcinogenic, but studies during and leading up to the early 2000s failed to confirm any cancer risk from pink insulation. The organic fiber asbestos has consistently been more strongly linked to health risks than fiberglass.

The glass which forms the raw material for pink insulation is made of silica, a compound consisting of silicon and oxygen atoms. It has no true melting point, but gets softer the more it is heated. For the manufacture of insulation, the glass is heated until it can be extruded into fibers of very small diameter. In response to environmental concerns, makers of insulation are increasingly recycling glass and reusing old glass as a raw material. http://www.ebiochem.com/

What Is an Ionic Surfactant?

Surfactants are a category of substances that are used for various purposes, for example as detergents and emulsifiers. The molecules of a surfactant have one end, called the tail, which is insoluble in water but soluble in oil, while the other end, the head, is water soluble. These molecular properties mean surfactants can disperse oil in water, and can also be used to remove oil and dirt from fabrics, surfaces, and other objects. An ionic surfactant is a surfactant made up of molecules that have either negatively or positively charged heads: anionic surfactants have a negative charge, while cationic surfactants have a positive charge. Some common uses for ionic surfactants are as ingredients in soap, bathroom cleaners, disinfectants, stain removers and fabric softeners.http://www.ebiochem.com/

Water molecules and oil molecules usually repel each other. This is why oil rises to the top when added to water, and it is also why water by itself cannot effectively be used to clean up oil or grease. However, when an ionic surfactant or other type of surfactant is added to water, the surfactant molecules rise to the surface and act as an emulsifier, holding the water and oil together. This eventually disperses the oil in the water. The word surfactant is a combination of the words surface active agent, referring to this process.http://www.ebiochem.com/

The properties of an ionic surfactant vary depending on its charge. Anionic surfactants often create a lot of foam and have excellent cleaning capabilities. They are commonly used in shampoos, laundry detergents, and dishwashing liquids. Examples of this kind of negatively charged, ionic surfactant substances are phosphates, sulphates, and carboxylates, including alkyl carboxylates like soap.

Cationic surfactants are commonly used as fabric softeners and stain removers, especially for greasy stains. They are also added to household cleaning products because of their sanitizing and disinfectant properties. Examples of this type of positively charged, ionic surfactant substances are benzethonium chloride and cetylpyridinium chloride. There are also many kinds of nonionic surfactants that do not carry a charge. http://www.ebiochem.com/

One drawback of using an ionic surfactant is that because of its negative or positive charge, it attracts compounds made up of molecules carrying the opposite charge. This can make an ionic surfactant less effective at removing oil and grease. For example, anionic surfactants in a laundry detergent can attract positively charged calcium molecules in the water, reducing its capability to remove stains and dirt. To counteract this, one can add more detergent or use certain additives in the water.

Sore Throat Natural Remedy

Contrary to what mainstream media tends to teach, experiencing a cold or the flu periodically can actually be helpful to your health. www.ebiochem.com

By and large, the viruses that cause the common cold and flu infect mainly your weakest cells, which you want to get rid of and have replaced by healthy cells. This makes sense, doesn’t it? Cells that are already burdened with excessive waste products and toxins are most likely to allow viruses to infect them. www.ebiochem.com

So in the big scheme of things, a cold or flu can allow your body to purge itself of old and damaged cells that, in the absence of a viral infection, would normally take much longer to identify, destroy, and eliminate. www.ebiochem.com

With all of that said, you should know of a natural remedy for a sore throat that can often precede a cold or flu. Yes, that feeling of having crushed glass floating around in your throat can often be remedied without conventional over-the-counter analgesics. www.ebiochem.com

I’ve written before about gargling with salt water. Sometimes, several quality gargling sessions with salt water is enough to resolve a prickly throat. www.ebiochem.com

But where you need more lysing power, you might try using a mixture of hot red chili powder – often called Cayenne pepper – and orange juice. Koreans call Cayenne pepper go choo kah roo, which are the fine hot chili pepper flecks used to make thousands of varieties of kim chi. Just a simple blend of 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of hot red chili powder and pulpy orange juice, taken with a straw, can provide almost instant relief from a sore throat. www.ebiochem.com

Be sure not to use more than 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon for about every 8 ounces of orange juice, as Cayenne pepper is a highly concentrated spicy food powder, and when taken in higher amounts, can aggravate parts of your gastrointestinal tract. This warning is especially important to heed where there is a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, or even ulcerations in the duodenum. www.ebiochem.com

Cayenne pepper plus pulpy orange juice is best taken down with a straw, as there is no need to expose the mucous lining of your mouth to the active ingredients of hot red chilis. Just take this mixture straight to your throat with a straw, slow and steady. Repeat every two to three hours until your throat is free of discomfort. www.ebiochem.com

The idea is to deliver the active ingredients of red hot chili powder to the viruses that have lodged themselves within the tonsils and adenoids that line the back of your throat region. Viruses that cause colds and flus typically get caught by your tonsils and adenoids before they spread through your body. In this way, your tonsils and adenoids are important parts of your immune system because they are located near the entrance of your breathing passages, where they serve as a first line of defence against undesirable airborne microorganisms and substances. www.ebiochem.com

This, by the way, is why it is best not to remove tonsils and adenoids from your throat region. Chronic swelling of tonsils and adenoids is best addressed by reducing sugar intake, adopting a minimally processed diet that is rich in fresh plant foods, and supporting immune system health by getting plenty of rest, exercise, and exposure to sunlight and fresh air. www.ebiochem.com

Depending on how quickly you turn to this natural home remedy for a sore throat, you may even ward off a full blown cold or flu. But even if you do continue on with a cold or flu, you can at least go through this natural cleansing process without an agonizingly sore throat. Don’t forget to get lots of rest, drink plenty of healthy fluids, ensure optimal vitamin D status, and take comfort in knowing that countless viruses are at work on your behalf to dispose of your weakest cells. And don’t forget to blow your nose as often as it runs; help your body get rid of what it wants to get rid of. www.ebiochem.com

I’ve hesitated in the past to share this tip of using red hot chili powder with orange juice for a sore throat because I was afraid that some might overdo this and end up suffering elsewhere. When followed properly, this remedy often astonishes with its effectiveness, so please be careful and conservative in your use of red hot chili powder. www.ebiochem.com

For young children or those who have a history of gastrointestinal trouble when taking spicy foods, you can use even less red hot chili powder, and even consider ingesting a banana, potato, or even some rice before taking the Cayenne-orange juice blend, as having some healthy mass in the stomach right before taking the drink can help protect the lining of the GI tract against the active ingredients of red hot chilis. www.ebiochem.com

Please consider sharing this information with family and friends. And please don’t forget to emphasize the warning on being conservative in dose. It’s such a highly effective home remedy without the cost or negative effects of conventional pharmaceutical solutions. www.ebiochem.com

Do You Know They Are Used For Rhinitis?

Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal passages. This inflammation can cause a variety of annoying symptoms, including sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, runny nose, and post-nasal drip (the sensation that mucus is draining from the sinuses down the back of the throat). www.ebiochem.com

Brief episodes of rhinitis are usually caused by respiratory tract infections with viruses (eg, the common cold). Chronic rhinitis is usually caused by allergies, but it can also occur from overuse of certain drugs, some medical conditions, and other unidentifiable factors. www.ebiochem.com

Allergic rhinitis is caused by a nasal reaction to small airborne particles called allergens (substances that provoke an allergic reaction). In some people, these particles also cause reactions in the lungs (asthma) and eyes (allergic conjunctivitis).

The allergic reaction is characterized by activation of two types of inflammatory cells, called mast cells and basophils. These cells produce inflammatory substances, such as histamine, which cause fluid to build up in the nasal tissues (congestion), itching, sneezing, and runny nose. Over several hours, these substances activate other inflammatory cells that can cause persistent symptoms. www.ebiochem.com

Chlorphenamine (INN) or chlorpheniramine (USAN, former BAN), commonly marketed in the form of chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlorphen-12[1]), is a first-generation alkylamine antihistamine used in the prevention of the symptoms of allergic conditions such as rhinitis and urticaria. Chlorpheniramine relieves red, itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; itchy nose or throat; and runny nose caused by allergies, hay fever, and the common cold. Chlorpheniramine helps control the symptoms of cold or allergies but will not treat the cause of the symptoms or speed recovery. www.ebiochem.com

Brompheniramine (Bromfed, Dimetapp, Bromfenex, Dimetane, BPN, Lodrane), commonly marketed as its salt brompheniramine maleate, is an antihistamine drug of the propylamine (alkylamine) class. It is readily available over the counter and is indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of the common cold and allergic rhinitis, such as runny nose, itchy eyes, watery eyes, and sneezing. It is a first-generation antihistamine. www.ebiochem.com

Carbinoxamine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 2 years old. www.ebiochem.com

10 Easy Diet Tips during weight loss

Are you tired of diet tips espoused by people with apparently unlimited income and time? For a lot of us, it may just not be practical to spend half of our Sunday preparing carefully portioned meals for the rest of the week, or financially feasible to buy all our meals prepackaged in just the right portions. And there are those of us who cringe at the thought or mention of weighing food to achieve “optimal portion sizes.” www.ebiochem.com

Here are 10 free diet tips for practical people. www.ebiochem.com

Eating out a lot? Restaurant portions tend to be enormous, and if it’s on the plate, we are inclined to eat it. If it’s possible, order from the kid’s menu or select an appetizer, where portions are more reasonably sized. You can also split an entree. www.ebiochem.com

Keep healthy snacks and make them easily accessible. A bowl of fruit on the kitchen table, a container of celery or carrot sticks in the fridge, or a couple of pop-open cans of fruit salad in your desk at work will help you grab for something healthy when those first snaking desires begin. www.ebiochem.com

Substitute frozen vegetables for canned. Canned vegetables tend to be high in sodium, which you don’t need, and low in real nutrition, which you do. Use economy size bags with zip closures to make it easy to pour out a single serving for a meal. www.ebiochem.com

Get a vegetable steamer. Steaming is one of the healthiest ways to cook veggies. The food retains nearly all of its natural nutrients as opposed to leaching them out into the cooking water. Even better, it makes your veggies taste great — which means you’ll be more likely to eat them instead of filling up on fatty foods. www.ebiochem.com

Never eat standing up. One of the easiest ways to sabotage your diet is to “eat without thinking.” Treat eating with the respect it deserves. Fix yourself a plate and sit down and eat properly. You’ll be less likely to just pop food into your mouth without paying attention. www.ebiochem.com

Spread out your meals. When you eat three meals a day, your body tends to store whatever it doesn’t need at that moment. By adopting a “grazing” habit, you’ll keep your metabolism working throughout the day. Have a small breakfast, a piece of fruit with crackers or toast at midmorning, a light lunch and an “after school snack” mid-afternoon. Just remember that you’re breaking up the same amount of food into smaller meals, not ADDING more food to your daily diet. www.ebiochem.com

Grab a fruit juice instead of soda. Soda is nothing but empty calories. No nutrients, lots of sugar and carbonation. Grab a bottle of 100% fruit juice, or pure water. www.ebiochem.com

Drink water. When you’re dieting, you should drink even more. It’s not just that full feeling — water helps your body digest properly and cleans out your system.

Can’t afford a gym membership? Make a pact with friends and exercise together. Set a date at least three times a week to play volleyball, take a walk, or spend half an hour doing something active. www.ebiochem.com

Skip on the potato chips. Fatty snacks fried in hydrogenated oil like potato chips contribute fat and calories and are terrible for you. Instead, grab a handful of dried fruit or a cup of yogurt. You’ll get the same amount of calories and these contain a lot more nutritional benefit. www.ebiochem.com

Herbs for a Healthy Liver and Gall Bladder

Keeping your liver and gall bladder healthy is a key component of keeping your entire body healthy. Since the liver and gall bladder are the two organs which filter and process toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances from our bodies, these organs must be kept in prime operating condition in order for the rest of the body to maintain its best levels of health. www.ebiochem.com

The liver is the primary waste disposal organ in our bodies. Its job is to filter out wastes, toxins, bacteria and other poisonous substances from our blood. The liver creates bile from this waste and sends it on to the gall bladder, which in turn sends it into the small intestine. When the liver or gall bladder are having problems, the toxins may not be filtered out of blood stream well enough, or the waste may get stagnated and start leaking toxins back into the blood stream. When this back up or leakage occurs, it causes problems for other bodily organs and functions.

Usually you can help the liver and gall bladder stay healthy by simply keeping the bile flowing regularly. Because when bile backs up, that can cause damage or stagnation throughout the entire system. With that said however, there are also several herbs that can either help to move things along, as well as help the liver and gall bladder do their jobs. www.ebiochem.com

Here are several herbs which are said to help clean, heal, and maintain the liver and gall bladder: www.ebiochem.com

Dandelion is a weed which grows almost everywhere, and it’s a wonderful herb packed full of vitamins and nutrients. Dandelion helps cleanse the liver by increasing its activity and increasing the flow of bile into the intestines. Dandelion is even considered an excellent herbal remedy for treating hepatitis, which is a liver disease.

Horsetail is an herbal diuretic which is useful for expelling worms and parasites. Sometimes liver and gall bladder sicknesses are due to the presence of parasites, so expelling them is considered standard procedure. www.ebiochem.com

Ginger is an herb which acts as a cleanser for both the kidneys and bowels, and helps remove toxins from the body. www.ebiochem.com

Yellow Dock is a natural laxative which helps with liver congestion and expels worms and parasites. Yellow dock dissolves mucus and moves it through the system, plus it cleans the lymphatic system. Yellow dock is another herb which has been successfully used to treat hepatitis.www.ebiochem.com

Yarrow is an herb which regulates and tones the liver, plus it has healing affects on the glandular system. www.ebiochem.com

Frankincense to Treat Arthritis?

The answer to treating painful arthritis could lie in an age old herbal remedy – frankincense, according to Cardiff University scientists. www.ebiochem.com

Cardiff scientists have been examining the potential benefits of frankincense to help relieve and alleviate the symptoms of the condition. www.ebiochem.com

“The search for new ways of relieving the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a long and difficult one,” according to Dr Emma Blain, who leads the research with her co-investigators Professor Vic Duance from Cardiff University’s School of Biosciences and Dr Ahmed Ali of the Compton Group. www.ebiochem.com

“The South West of England and Wales has a long standing connection with the Somali community who have used extracts of frankincense as a traditional herbal remedy for arthritic conditions. www.ebiochem.com

“What our research has focused on is whether and how these extracts can help relieve the inflammation that causes the pain,” she added. www.ebiochem.com

The Cardiff scientists believe they have been able to demonstrate that treatment with an extract of Boswellia frereana – a rare frankincense species – inhibits the production of key inflammatory molecules which helps prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue which causes the condition. www.ebiochem.com

Dr Ali adds: “The search for new drugs to alleviate the symptoms of conditions like inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a priority area for scientists. What our research has managed to achieve is to use innovative chemical extraction techniques to determine the active ingredient in frankincense. www.ebiochem.com

“Having done this we are now able to further characterise the chemical entity and compare its success against other anti-inflammatory drugs used for treating the condition.” www.ebiochem.com

The research comes as a result of a seedcorn project, funded by the Severnside Alliance for Translational Research (SARTRE), through the MRC Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme devolved portfolio. www.ebiochem.com
