Native to Southeast Asia, the Garcinia mangostana or mangosteen plant produces fruit that may yield health benefits when used medicinally. Extract from the mangosteen fruit has been used traditionally to alleviate symptoms associated with diarrhea and skin infections. However, more research is needed to support the purported health benefits of mangosteen extract. Before taking any type of mangosteen treatment, be sure to talk with your medical provider about the side effects of mangosteen extract.
Lactic Acidosis
Health professionals with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, or MSKCC, note that in one reported case, severe lactic acidosis occurred following daily consumption of mangosteen juice for 12 months. Lactic acidosis is a condition in which lactic acid abnormally accumulates in the bloodstream. Symptoms associated with lactic acidosis include nausea and weakness. Left undetected or untreated, acid buildup in the body may cause life-threatening medical complications such as shock. Seek care from your medical provider if you experience lactic acidosis symptoms following treatment with mangosteen extract.
